Unfortunately, my uterus hasn\u2019t grown anything useful since 1996, so I\u2019m starting to wonder if, perhaps, the steps I\u2019ve been taking to slim down aren\u2019t particularly effective. Here\u2019s what I\u2019ve been doing:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>1. Making no changes to my diet<\/p>\n<p>2. Weighing myself and getting mad<\/p>\n<p>3. Buying exercise equipment that I rarely use (and that I eventually donate to charity)<\/p>\n<p>4. Making no changes to my diet\u2026<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, no matter how hard I try (and, as you can see, I\u2019ve been trying really hard), those 10 pounds just won\u2019t disappear.<\/p>\n<p>But now I\u2019ve been inspired\u2014<em>really<\/em> inspired. I went to see a power lifting competition last week. Here\u2019s a short\u201420 second\u2014clip (the woman lifting 350 pounds, and winning her division, is my future daughter-in-law, Christina):<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 625px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-581-1\" width=\"625\" height=\"625\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"http:\/\/brendakearns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VID_114910502_150146_123.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/brendakearns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VID_114910502_150146_123.mp4\">http:\/\/brendakearns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VID_114910502_150146_123.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But back to my pregnancy fat\u2026after watching all of the amazing, strong women at that competition (a few of whom were as old as me) I\u2019ve completely changed my approach. I am <em>no longer<\/em> going to obsess about losing 10 pounds. Instead, I\u2019m going to obsess about building muscle and becoming stronger. I\u2019m going to the gym!<\/p>\n<p>My oldest daughter, Leah\u2014who believes someone should always be nearby to call 911 when I do stupid things\u2014has offered to join me. We\u2019ve gone to the gym twice, and I\u2019m doing it <em>all<\/em>\u2014bench presses, bicep curls, triceps extensions, leg presses, squats, hamstring curls\u2026everything!<\/p>\n<p>And how is it going, you ask? Well, I\u2019ve found out that the human body has a lot of muscles\u2014and when they\u2019re all tight and sore at the same time, it can be difficult to do really challenging tasks, like pole vaulting or turning on taps.<\/p>\n<p>The good news: Leah hasn\u2019t had to call 911, yet. The bad news: My dishwasher is broken, so I need to turn on the kitchen tap. Tomorrow we\u2019re going for workout #3.
